interesting Facts:
Wasps pollinate wild figs. A special kind of fig wasp is necessary for pollinating many kinds of wild figs. A queen wasp actually crawls in through a tiny opening in the fig and lays her eggs inside. They hatch, mate, and the males tunnel out, allowing the queen to crawl out herself, transferring pollen from one flower to another.
Commercial figs are wasp free. Most commonly consumed figs come from self-pollinating female trees. While naturally occurring, they don’t grow from seeds and must be propagated by planting cuttings.
Figs are super old. They’re considered by many historians to be the oldest domesticated crop, with fig tree remains dating back to 5000 B.C. To put it in perspective, that’s 5,000 years before the domestication of olives, grapes and dates!
Figs are flowers. Technically, the term is inflorescence. Inside a fig is a bundle of inward-growing flowers that look like seeds.
